Paua fishing 黒あわび~パウア~

DSC_0033

What an end to a long holiday! After an amazing day in the Catlins on Saturday we managed to cross off another experience off our list of must do’s over the summer holidays. I am a great enthusiast of all thing edible as long as they do not contain butter cream or lady fingers. Yukie …

Southland and Fjordland

DSC_0013

It has been nearly 3 full months since we moved here and time seems to have flown by. I started my new job shortly after we got here and in between working full time, organizing various insurance, moving 3 times and buying a house I have had little time to really get to see much …

犬のしつけ本

DSC_0026

スパーキーの学校初日が終わった後、古本市で偶然「WHY DOES MY DOG…?」by John Fisherという本を発見。

My wooden Mini Simmons

arpil-may2013 334

My surfboard is floating. After spending nearly 6 months building my wooden board it is finally complete. I had it out a couple of time in various sizes and its scary! It hurts when it hits you and I have developed a habit of diving as deep as I can and waiting for a few …

Tree House

arpil-may2013 541

After a couple of hours of noisy hammering and cutting we finally have a little tree house. Celebrated with a Havana (thanks Kamil) and a can of lager.

Harvest

We always wanted to make our own bread from our own flour. Finally its harvest time and although we were late putting seeds in, there might be enough for a few loafs.

Has it been a year again? Nina has turned 11 and we are camping at Urata again. Check out the fish we were given by a local fisherman. Straight of the boat!

Full house

arpil-may2013 282

Although my mum and one of my 2 brothers could not make it, my oldest brother and his family came to see us on our little island. It was great to see the kids play and roam in the wild and we had a fantastic time. As an added bonus, Yukie’s sister and her family …

The madness in progress

january2013 448

Hey this is faster than I thought. I spent a total of about 10 hours building over the last few weeks and can’t believe how fast this is progressing. Captain Sparky is impressed, I think he can’t wait to go fishing. The three pieces are done and bolted together. There is also a picture of …

Boodori, Japanese farmers war dance

january2013 217

Last year I was over the moon to see Nina dance a local traditional dance. This year both Nina and Anna were dancing on 3 separate occasions. The pictures are from their last performance outside the primary school in Nishino. The cultural experience is surely one of the reasons we moved here in the first …

I have always wanted a boat and even nearly boat a yacht of ebay once. Well I have decided to build a Waapa outrigger sailing boat. The idea is to build it so it can be easily loaded in my truck and moved about. I have decided to build three separate parts that can be …

Vegetable delivery

Today I was given so much veg that on top of what we produce ourselves there was no way we could ever eat it all. So I decided to chuck in in my truck and do delivery to all of the villagers we know that have not got gardens. Over a year in Tanegashima and …

Yakushima Island

yakushimaNOV2012 189

Just next door from where we live is another little island called Yakushima. Its quite well known and its a world heritage site. It has become quite popular since the release of the Princess Mononoke animation by Gibli which based the forest visuals on the island’s moss forests with its over thousand year old trees. …

Sumo wrestiling!

nichino_festivalNOV2012 176

Surely Tanegashima will produce some pro wrestlers, but it won’t be our girls. We don’t really get a proper winter but at 10 degrees and 10 mile wind I would not take my clothes off.

Tanegashima Maenohama beach

This is fast becoming my favorite spot. We spent an evening here recently barbecuing some chicken and watching the stars (no light pollution for 100 miles). When the surf is on here it is killer fast but if you manage a good take off its fun, otherwise you eat sand (I eat a lot!) and …

Climbing Pumpkin

These days I keep falling over pumpkins in the bushes. Its great to play hide and seek with food. Its a bit like easter egg hunting. The best one so far I found dangling over my head by the side of the house. Amazing nature! Can you find the pumpkin?
