Full house

arpil-may2013 282

Although my mum and one of my 2 brothers could not make it, my oldest brother and his family came to see us on our little island. It was great to see the kids play and roam in the wild and we had a fantastic time. As an added bonus, Yukie’s sister and her family …

Boodori, Japanese farmers war dance

january2013 217

Last year I was over the moon to see Nina dance a local traditional dance. This year both Nina and Anna were dancing on 3 separate occasions. The pictures are from their last performance outside the primary school in Nishino. The cultural experience is surely one of the reasons we moved here in the first …

Vegetable delivery

january2013 143

Today I was given so much veg that on top of what we produce ourselves there was no way we could ever eat it all. So I decided to chuck in in my truck and do delivery to all of the villagers we know that have not got gardens. Over a year in Tanegashima and …

Yakushima Island

yakushimaNOV2012 189

Just next door from where we live is another little island called Yakushima. Its quite well known and its a world heritage site. It has become quite popular since the release of the Princess Mononoke animation by Gibli which based the forest visuals on the island’s moss forests with its over thousand year old trees. …

Sumo wrestiling!

nichino_festivalNOV2012 176

Surely Tanegashima will produce some pro wrestlers, but it won’t be our girls. We don’t really get a proper winter but at 10 degrees and 10 mile wind I would not take my clothes off.

Tanegashima Maenohama beach

0022

This is fast becoming my favorite spot. We spent an evening here recently barbecuing some chicken and watching the stars (no light pollution for 100 miles). When the surf is on here it is killer fast but if you manage a good take off its fun, otherwise you eat sand (I eat a lot!) and …

Minamitane Sports Day

october2012 015

The Minami Town sports day is a serious affair. First you have to qualify to take part by proving yourself in the local school sports day, and then you get to train for a few weeks to represent your local area. Well done Anna! Sorry Nina and Yukie, you did not make it. Daddy did …

School Swimming Competition.

july 2012 school swimming 018

For the last two months or so our kids have been having a fantastic time at school enjoying swimming lessons in the open air pool.  They spend at least three times a week in the pool learning to swim and enjoying themselves. If there is one thing that really amazes me about the Japanese school …

Urata beach

happy birthday Nina

We have spent an amazing few days at Urata beach, the north of Tanegashima to celebrate Nina’s birthday. The water was clear and calm and the place was heaving with fish. I managed to get all of my girls in to  snorkel although Anna was a bit reluctant and Yukie thought the sudden drop of …

More Fish

abara lovely fresh fish

Today we got more fish. I love fish so much I could eat it all day. Me and the girls agree on this, fish if fresh can only be eaten in one way and that is raw. Forget about grilling or whatever else humans have come up with over the last 10000 years or so. …

sardines looking at knife

People here are treating us  very nicely. We have yet to buy vegetables. We get a near daily delivery of vegetables, weekly fresh fish and now and then some eggs, cake… Social life is demanding but really warm and rewarding. Never realized how nice people can be. Yesterday we were given 40 fresh sardines by …

Potato Farming with Master Hidaka.

Anna and Hidaka Jiichan

This morning Anna and I spent time with our favourite neighbour. He turns up nearly every day with vegetables and potatoes. He has a permanent smile on his face and he has more energy than 5 15 year olds put together. The other day he arrived outside the house on his Honda Cub and jumped …

O-odori, Singing in the rain.

Today we were supposed to take part in the much anticipated and rehearsed Misaki shrine dance which is held every year at Kadokura Cape situate at the very south end of Tanegashima. The site itself is magical with its sea view enhanced by the traditional dancing (called O-odori) and singing it feels even more magical. …

Sea sick!

I want to sleep!

What a morning after a night on a rocking boat in the typhoon. Yukie is tired, she woke up to the sound of water splashing by her feet followed by manic cleaning and scrubbing noises. It was the smell that finally gave it away. We spent the night in a dorm on the ship with …

Hey finally after a few days in Yukie’s home town and a visit to her old teacher we are on our way to the island. It was great to meat Yukie’s old teacher again. I met him some 15 years ago when we tried to setup an exhibition in Kyoto city centre and used his …
